Coaching group adds more experience for 2018

Cambridge will go into the 2018 season with more coaching experience at top senior level than ever before.

The latest appointments by the club are Michael Taylor who will co-coach the team to play in next season’s Northern League Reserves’ competition, and Shane Ridgway who joins the first team coaching group.

Both have had prior roles in the Northern League and they join a senior coaching group stacked with experience.

They’ll work with the first team group of head coach Mike Woodlock, assistant Ray Pooley, goalkeeper coach Kim Brierley and team manager Chrissy Goodin.

Players' meeting - November 23

With the coaching appointments now confirmed, the coaches are keen to discuss plans for 2018 with senior players at a meeting at the senior clubrooms on Thursday November 23 (7pm start).

Returning players, and those considering joining Cambridge for the club’s return to Northern League, are urged to attend.

Taylor, who moved to Cambridge last year from Auckland, has coached senior teams since 1988, including West Auckland, Te Atatu and Waitemata in the Auckland Conference, and was assistant coach for Three Kings United’s Northern League squad.

His last role saw him coach Northern League club Metro FC between 2014 and 2017.

Ridgeway was previously at Cambridge as first team manager in 2014. Since then, he’s had coaching/management roles with Ngaruawahia United and West Hamilton United.

He coached the West Hamilton team in last season’s WaiBOP Premiership and is currently seeking his Level 2 Senior coaching qualifications.

The first team, who play in the Northern League’s Second Division next year, will be led by Woodlock who coached Cambridge to WaiBOP Premiership titles in 2015 and 2017. He previously coached Cambridge in the Northern League in 2009 and 2011.

Assisting him will be Ray Pooley who was Cambridge’s director of football in 2014 and returns to the club after a stint with Claudelands Rovers' Northern League team in 2015-16.

He has also worked with Ngaruawahia United's Northern League squad and with the Waikato FC National League squad.

Goalkeeper coach Brierley goes into his fifth campaign with Cambridge next season, having relocated his Just4Keepers academy to the club in 2014.

Vastly experienced, Brierley has coached some of the region’s most promising ‘keepers, helping a number win national age group status.

Goodin, an accomplished player with Cambridge’s women’s first team, enters her fourth season as the senior squad’s team manager.

Her organisational skills have helped the coaching group focus on playing matters and ensure Cambridge squads are well prepared.
