Cambridge B's reach Waikato Cup final

Cambridge are heading to the final of this year’s Soccer Shop Waikato Cup.

Represented by their Waikato B side, the club will meet Otorohanga in the final of the region’s premier knockout competition.

Both finalists caused upsets in their semi-finals, each beating teams from Hamilton club Melville United.

Cambridge took the lead over Melville United B in the 15th minute of their game at John Kerkhof Park when Alex Ball found the net for a rare goal.

Melville fought back and levelled 10 minutes before half-time.

Both teams had their share of veteran players and the soggy pitch took its toll but neither side was willing to surrender a chance at cup final glory.

Cambridge’s nerve held the better and Jason Szabo scored the winner – his 18th goal of the season in the league and cup – in a frantic scramble.

The home side ran the clock down and survived a couple of late scares, with goalkeeper Paul MaCann cleaning up Melville attacks, despite a broken finger.

The win was sweet revenge for Cambridge after Melville had the better of their league outings this season.

Cambridge now wait to hear where the final will be held but knowing they will meet Otorohanga who play in the same Waikato B division.

Otorohanga caused an upset, beating Melville United A 1-0.

To reach the semi-finals, Cambridge B beat Hamilton Wanderers Classics in the quarter-finals (won 6-1), Claudelands Rovers (won 4-1) and Te Awamutu A (won 2-1). The side had a first round bye.

It’s the first time Cambridge have reached the cup final since 2013 when the club’s Waikato A team lost to Hamilton Wanderers.

More than 800 spectators attended last year’s Waikato Cup and Plate finals day at John Kerkhof Park.
