Cambridge finish top of Waikato women's competition

Cambridge have won the Waikato Women’s A league after an impressive campaign which saw the team remain unbeaten.

Beating Claudelands Rovers 3-1 at John Kerkhof Park in their final fixture of the Waikato competition, Cambridge topped the league table by a point after winning eight of their games and drawing the other.

The team’s success means Cambridge now qualifies to play in a Waikato/Bay of Plenty regional league which will bring together the best club sides from the Waikato and Bay leagues.

The scorers for Cambridge in their latest win were Astrid Howarth (2) and Rachel Westend.

The team has conceded only eight goals all season but has scored more than 70.

Three players have contributed 42 goals between them – Bethanee Witt (16), Astrid Howarth (14) and Marie O’Neill (12).

The challenge now will be for Cambridge to prove themselves against the top Bay of Plenty sides in Tauranga City United, Whakatane Town, Otumoetai and Papamoa.

Waikato’s other challengers will be two sides from Melville United and Tokoroa.

Meanwhile, Cambridge remain contenders for the Waikato Women’s Cup and will face Matamata Swifts in a second round tie at John Kerkhof Park next Sunday (June 25).

In the Waikato Women’s B division, Cambridge’s second side drew 2-2 at Waikato Unicol on Sunday.

Scorers for Cambridge were Maddy Burnett and Caitlin Varcoe.
